Take Away

Resources required: 1 tray, 1 cloth or towel that will cover the tray and several small items.

Children sit in a circle.

Teacher brings out a tray with items on the tray and sets the tray in the middle of the circle so each child can see the tray’s contents. Give the children a minute to memorize what the items are on the tray. Teacher covers up the tray and removes an item. Do not allow the children to see the item that was taken away.

Teacher unveils the tray and the children have to guess which item has been taken away.

Variations:
  • Take more than one item away at a time.
  • Use coloured items to help children learn their colours.
  • Use cut out shapes (e.g. circle, square, triangle, etc.) to help children learn their shapes.
